We have vegetables and flowers growing out of our ears! From the start of the morning until the end, everyone worked diligently on picking as many vegetables and flowers as possible. This big harvest comes in conjunction with our Harvest Garden Party. On August 3rd, gardeners, Mooseheart youth, family, teachers, and the wellness community come together to sample recipes made from the harvest. It is a celebration of our hard work paying off but also a demonstration of the diversity and deliciousness of our vegetables in recipes. We started off with the carrots and by the end had buckets full of kale, tomatoes, bell peppers, eggplant, beets, spinach, jalapeno, broccoli, and basil. The carrots and beets were trimmed of their roots and then washed. The kale leaves were separated from its midvein to avoid the bitter taste that part of the plant. The vegetables won’t be the only star of the show tomorrow, we will have flower arrangements of sunflowers, zinnias, and bachelor button from our garden as well. The flowers were trimmed and put into a homemade preservative by the garden coordinator, Sherri Shallenberg. The future flowers will be delivered to the clients along with their meals. Aren’t flowers always the perfect touch?
